Vapor Smoothing

Improved Surfaces

Vapor smoothing with AMT's PostPro SF50 system improves surface finish, seals surfaces, and improves material properties at an economical price. Upload your models for an instant quote of vapor-smoothed MJF parts!

Appearance

  • Vapor smoothed parts are glossy in surface sheen, similar to how an injection molded part would look. The smooth finish can be semi reflective and also serve as a better base for other finishing techniques such as paint, Cerakote, and metal plating.
  • Raw MJF Nylon parts have a surface roughness average (Ra) of 6-13μm. After vapor smoothing, this can be lowered to 1.5μm or better. Ra can be under 1μm if a longer cycle is run. Please contact us if you have special requirements for your parts.
  • Vapor smoothed parts offer a better surface for product stickers adhesion. Stickers do not adhere well to the raw MJF finish.
  • Layer lines, especially when parts are dyed, are very difficult to see on a vapor smoothed part.

Material Property Improvements

  • The smooth surface eliminates micro crack propagation sites, resulting in elongation at break improvement by 20%. This means that your part can stretch or bend 20% farther before breaking completely.
  • Water will bead up on a vapor smoothed surface instead of absorbing into the surface
  • Medical parts can be sterilized in an autoclave
  • Smoothed parts are biocompatible; they can be against the skin for extended periods of time
  • The low surface roughness eliminates hiding places for food and bacteria to grow, allowing MJF parts to be used in the food industry
  • Parts can be quickly wiped clean
  • Vapor smoothing is a dimensionally stable process; it does not add or remove thickness or cause warping
  • Keep in mind that parts still need to be suspended in the vapor smoothing machine, which will cause a blemish on the contact point(s) Please contact us if you have specific requirements for your finish. Otherwise, our best judgement will be used.
